Built in 1901 by the renowned theatre designer Frank Matcham, the Hackney Empire was a technological wonder of its time. But by the end of the 20th century it was in urgent need of repair.
Lottery funding and a public restoration appeal campaign in 2001 allowed us to partially restore and upgrade our facilities. We now want to secure this work by creating a new Building Reserve, a pot of money specifically for on-going repairs and maintenance.
As custodians of the Hackney Empire, we're committed to ensuring that future generations will have a theatre just as beautiful, and as much of a wonder, as their great-grandparents did in 1901.
