Donate to the Building Reserve
Built in 1901 by the renowned theatre designer Frank Matcham, the Hackney Empire was a technological wonder of its time. A hundred years later Lottery funding and a public restoration appeal campaign allowed us to restore, refurbish and upgrade the building and its facilities.
To secure this vital work and to ensure Hackney Empire remains the cultural hub of the community in the 21st century we are calling on all our supporters to donate to the Building Reserve Fund.
Hackney Empire embraces and celebrates the enormously varied local audiences many of whom have no other engagement with the arts. The increased footfall and success of our many performances and programmes has led to significant wear and tear of the theatre and we need to ensure that it survives another hundred years.
Hackney Empire is ‘the heart of its borough. It is its community hall. It is its lifeblood. It is its meeting place.’ Griff Rhys Jones
As custodians of this Grade II* listed building, we're committed to ensuring that future generations will have a theatre just as beautiful, and as much of a wonder, as their great-grandparents.
