Julian Joseph and Mike Phillips’ compelling jazz opera tells the fast-paced story of Negro League baseball players and their jazz compatriots struggling to achieve their dreams, in a time of segregation.
Inspired by the era of Ellington and Armstrong, Joseph’s swinging score offers a lively evening of home runs, peanuts and Cracker Jack, which is great fun for all the family!
Described as “undeniably thrilling and illuminating” by The Guardian, it features The Julian Joseph Quintet, Cleveland Watkiss and a cast of Hackney schoolchildren whose “energy, infectious enthusiasm and surprising rhythmic power brought the numbers to life” (The Evening Standard). This special performance is a fundraiser for Hackney Music Development Trust – “deservedly touted as one of the country’s exemplary arts education outfits” (Opera).
