Cal McCrystal, the comedy director behind the National Theatre’s smash hit One Man, Two Guvnors, directs this witty new production of Life on the Moon (Il mondo della luna), one of the most popular of Haydn’s many operas.
'Flawless from start to finish' ★★★★★ Independent on ETO’s Paul Bunyan
‘Entertaining and enlightening’ ★★★★ Sunday Telegraph on ETO’s Magic Flute
The opera is a fast-moving treatment of a classic play by Carlo Goldoni, who also wrote The Servant of Two Masters, the play on which One Man, Two Guvnors is based.
To trick an old miser, his daughter and her suitor convince him that he has flown to the moon - a topsy-turvy world in their control. The score includes some of Haydn’s finest vocal writing, including two wonderful, spirited, extended finales which anticipate the music of Mozart and Beethoven.
ETO are now an Olivier Award winning company having won the Outstanding Achievement in Opera Award at this year’s ceremony
