News Story

Earlier this month, we brought together over 50 young creatives to stage a brand-new musical on our main stage in just 10 days!

On Sat 8 Aug, our stage was filled with the energy, imagination and creativity of the next generation of young artists, as our Artist Development Programme presented Threads. A newly devised production created and performed by over 50 young artists and creatives aged 14 – 19 years old.

Concept created by Joelthomas Coleallison
Directed by award-winning director Stef O’Driscoll

Threads was the culmination of the creative development, collaboration and discovery that took place throughout our Artist Development Programme (ADP), giving young people the opportunity to develop their skills, work with industry professionals and create and devise a brand-new piece of musical theatre together.

Through humour, heartfelt storytelling and moments of reflection, Threads explored the everyday relationships that often go unnoticed but form the backbone of our communities. It asked us to consider the people who quietly support us, the places we gather without thinking, and the traditions worth carrying forward.

One of the most exciting parts of Threads was seeing our Artist development programme’s impact come full circle. Alongside new artists, the production’s creative team brought together returning ADP alumni and collaborators, artists who have grown through Hackney Empire’s programmes and are now helping shape the creative experiences of the next generation.
